Acupuncture FAQ
Traditionally a Chinese treatment, Acupuncture has been around for over 4000 years. Acupuncture involves using fine needles to stimulate sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins, and an increase in blood to the area, encouraging healing
90% of the time, no! The needles are so fine that normally there isn’t even any blood or mark when you remove them. Your clinician will place their hand flat on your body when inserting the needle, this means that your nerves pick up the pressure of the hand rather than the needle.
Done correctly, acupuncture is completely safe. All our clinicians have had the correct training and are registered with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists
Physiotherapists (AACP). All needles are purchased through the AACP recommended distributor and are single use needles. You will see your clinician remove it from the packet. Each needle is in its own plastic tube, so it never touches anything other than your skin.
There are very few conditions that would mean you cannot have acupuncture, however there are many conditions that your clinician needs to be made aware of before treating with acupuncture.
Some conditions mean that acupuncture can be used excluding some acupuncture points. Your clinician will ask you about any other medical conditions prior to starting treatment.
Acupuncture is completely safe to use when done properly. The only ‘negative’ side effect is the possibility of slight dizziness following the session. This is normally caused by a drop in blood sugar levels so we recommend being well hydrated and eating before your session.
All other possible side effects, such as small bruising, will be discussed with you by your clinician prior to the treatment.
Yes, with certain conditions such as non specific lower back pain there is vast amounts of clinical evidence for its effectiveness. Acupuncture is no longer seen as a form of alternative treatment.
Yes. With the correct physiotherapy program acupuncture can assist in the full recovery of many injuries. Short term, acupuncture work great for reducing pain, long term it works best when used as an adjunct alongside treatment at our physiotherapy clinic in Bishop’s Stortford..
It is advisable to bring a pair of shorts if the problem is related to your leg. For ladies we recommend you wear a vest top if your complaint relates to your upper body.Â
If you have any medical letters relating to your current injury, or past similar injuries, please bring these. Please feel free to bring a chaperone if you wish.
