What Physiotherapy Involves

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare profession centred on movement, joint function, and physical performance. Treatment begins with a detailed assessment and clinical reasoning process. This allows us to identify the contributing factors behind pain or reduced function rather than focusing only on symptoms.
Management may include hands on techniques, guided exercise, and advice tailored to your work, sport, or daily routine. Where appropriate, physiotherapy can be supported by services such as sports massage, which some patients use to manage muscle tension alongside their rehabilitation programme, or acupuncture when indicated within a broader treatment plan.

What to Expect From Your First Appointment

An initial physiotherapy session includes time to talk through your history, symptoms, and goals, followed by a structured physical assessment. Findings are explained clearly so you understand what is happening and why certain treatments are recommended. The process used during an initial consultation and treatment session is designed to give you clarity from the start rather than uncertainty.
In some cases, diagnostic ultrasound can help clarify soft tissue involvement as part of a wider assessment process, particularly when tendon or muscle injury is suspected.

Conditions Commonly Managed With Physiotherapy

People attend physiotherapy for a wide range of concerns. Back and neck pain are frequent reasons for seeking care, particularly when stiffness or recurring flare ups begin to limit normal activity. Others present with knee or hip pain linked to changes in training load or prolonged sitting. Runners sometimes develop symptoms consistent with runner’s knee, especially when mileage increases quickly.
Physiotherapy can also support people recovering from sports related injury, or those preparing to return to activity following a period of reduced training. Where cycling comfort or performance is part of the picture, a bike fit assessment may form part of the wider management strategy.

Clinical Standards and Team Expertise

Physiotherapy at Charles Carter Clinics is delivered by a multidisciplinary team with varied clinical backgrounds. Each clinician works within professional standards and evidence informed practice. You can see the full team, including individual physiotherapist profiles such as Charlie Holt and Raj Sakadasariya, which outline qualifications and areas of interest.
Professional accreditation and governance form part of our commitment to safe care, and further detail on clinic standards is available within our accreditation information.

Treatment Approach and Wider Services

While physiotherapy often forms the foundation of care, some presentations may benefit from additional input such as ultrasound guided injections when clinically appropriate, or specific soft tissue work through sports massage. For individuals who are housebound or unable to attend clinic, home physio appointments provide an alternative setting for assessment and treatment.

Diagnostic ultrasound (when appropriate)

Diagnostic ultrasound may be used to support and confirm clinical assessment findings, where this adds clarity and informs appropriate management.

Ultrasound is not used routinely and is applied selectively, based on clinical judgement rather than as a default part of care.

Where diagnostic ultrasound is considered appropriate, it is included only as part of a 60-minute physiotherapy appointment with Charlie Holt. It is not available as a standalone service.

If you feel diagnostic ultrasound may be helpful, or if it is recommended following an assessment with another physio, a separate 60-minute appointment with Charlie Holt will be required to perform and interpret the scan and discuss its implications for management.

Physiotherapy FAQs

Yes. As part of your physiotherapy care, you may have access to our private rehabilitation space to complete your prescribed exercises between appointments.

Access is structured and clinician-prescribed, based on what’s appropriate for your stage of recovery. The space is intentionally kept quiet, with no more than two clients using it at any one time.

Rehab sessions are booked via the usual online booking system, allowing you to schedule sessions at times that suit you and complete your programme in a consistent, controlled environment.

Many clients work with one physio throughout their care. However, Charles Carter Clinics are unique in that we recognise and utilise the strengths of our physios.

Where appropriate, clients may be given the option to progress from hands-on treatment with one physio to rehab guided by another physio whose expertise is best suited to that stage of recovery.

This ensures each phase of your treatment is supported by the most appropriate clinical expertise, all within a single, coordinated treatment plan.

Yes. We accept both self-funding clients and most major private health insurance providers.

If you’re using insurance, we recommend checking your policy details in advance. If you’re unsure whether your insurer is accepted, our team can help clarify this for you.

The number of sessions required varies depending on the nature of your issue, how long it’s been present, and how you respond to treatment.

Some people require only a small number of sessions, while others benefit from a more structured rehab phase. Care is reviewed regularly, and treatment is progressed or concluded based on need — not a pre-set number of appointments.

If assessment suggests that another approach would be more appropriate, this will be discussed openly with you.

That may include a different type of treatment, a more targeted strength or balance programme, or referral to another service – either within our clinic or externally.

Our priority is always your recovery and long-term outcome, not keeping you under our care if a more suitable option exists elsewhere.

If you’re unsure which appointment or service is most appropriate, you can book a complimentary phone call with a senior physio, often available within 60 minutes.

It’s an opportunity to discuss your symptoms, ask questions, and clarify the most appropriate next step – with no pressure to book.
